NDLEA Harvests 112kg of Cannabis From Accident Scene on Kano Expressway

The Kano State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted 150 blocks and three sacks of cannabis sativa weighing 112 kilograms following a road crash at Gadar Tamburawa along the Zaria-Kano expressway.

The command’s spokesperson, Mr. Sadiq Muhammad-Maigatari, confirmed the development in a statement issued in Kano on Thursday.

He said the incident happened around 6 a.m. on September 6, when NDLEA operatives on patrol heard the sound of a collision between a Volkswagen Golf car and a truck.

“Officers rushed to the scene to rescue the occupants of the Golf, removing its windscreen, window and door to extricate the driver and passenger,” he explained.

According to him, the passenger attempted to escape after the door was opened but was immediately apprehended.

A search of the car later revealed the cannabis consignment hidden inside.

Muhammad-Maigatari added that the injured driver, who is currently receiving treatment, admitted that he was acting on behalf of the consignor and had carried out similar deliveries within and outside Kano before the incident.

He further disclosed that the suspect also confessed to driving against traffic to avoid NDLEA checkpoints.

“Initial reports indicated that the driver of the truck sustained fracture in the crash. This incident involved two offences: one-way driving leading to a collision and trafficking in narcotics,” the spokesman noted.

He said the State Commander, Mr. Abubakar Idris-Ahmad, has ordered that those involved be prosecuted, commending the swift action of the patrol team in both rescuing the victims and recovering the drugs.

Muhammad-Maigatari also praised the leadership of NDLEA Chairman, Brig.-Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (retd.), for providing the direction that continues to drive results across the country.

He urged citizens to shun drug trafficking and to report suspicious activities, stressing that public cooperation remains vital in the agency’s fight against illicit substances.
