Hilda Baci Kicks Off Guinness World Record Attempt For Largest Pot Of Jollof Rice

Nigerian celebrity chef, Hilda Baci, has officially begun her much-anticipated attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for the largest pot of jollof rice.

The event, which kicked off Friday at the car park of Eko Hotels and Suites, drew a massive crowd of food lovers, celebrities, cultural enthusiasts, and supporters who turned out to witness what has been described as another defining moment for African cuisine.

Originally planned for Muri Okunola Park, the venue was shifted to accommodate the over 20,000 people who registered to attend. The attempt involves cooking more than 5,000 kilograms of rice in a specially crafted pot with a capacity of 22,619 litres. Reports indicate that about 250 to 264 bags of rice are being used for the challenge.

Baci, who gained international fame after breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest cooking marathon in 2023, reassured fans of the quality of the food. “This will be the most amazing, hygienic meal you’ve ever eaten,” she said, noting that she personally washed the giant pot before cooking began.

The Guinness World Records organisation has also acknowledged the effort, wishing her and her team success. Beyond the record bid, the event has been packaged as a celebration of African food culture, featuring cultural showcases, food exhibitions, and live entertainment.

In an emotional moment before the challenge commenced, Baci’s mother joined her in prayer, asking for strength and safety throughout the marathon cooking exercise.

If successful, Hilda Baci will not only secure another Guinness World Record but also further spotlight Nigeria’s culinary heritage, with jollof rice a dish central to West African identity taking centre stage.
