US Approves $1 Billion Missile Sale to Finland

The United States has approved the sale of advanced air-to-air missiles and related equipment to Finland, a NATO member sharing a long border with Russia.

The approval was granted by the U.S. State Department on September 9, 2025, and announced publicly on September 10, 2025, by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA).

The $1.07 billion deal includes 405 AIM-120D-3 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAMs), eight guidance sections, and secure positioning systems. Raytheon Technologies (RTX) is the principal contractor responsible for supplying the missile systems.

The sale is intended to enhance Finland’s air defense capabilities and improve interoperability with U.S. and NATO forces. It comes amid heightened security concerns in Europe, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and escalating tensions involving Russia. Finland’s strategic location and recent NATO membership make it a critical partner in regional defense efforts.

The missile sale is subject to congressional review and has not yet resulted in a finalized contract.

If approved, the transaction will further strengthen U.S.-Finland defense relations and contribute to NATO’s collective security.

This is not Finland’s first major U.S. arms acquisition. In 2023, the country purchased the David’s Sling missile defense system, co-developed with Israel, as part of ongoing efforts to modernize its military and align with NATO standards.
