Tragic Diphtheria Outbreak Kills 10 Children in Niger State

At least 10 children have died in Niger State following a diphtheria outbreak affecting communities in Agaie and Bida Local Government Areas, multiple sources reported on Wednesday.

The children were admitted to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Bida, but succumbed to complications arising from the disease, reportedly worsened by a shortage of essential medications. Local residents say additional deaths have occurred in surrounding villages, suggesting the toll may be higher.

Health authorities confirmed the outbreak but noted that some parents had refused to vaccinate their children, contributing to the spread and high fatality rate. Officials are calling for urgent intervention to provide medical supplies and vaccines to the affected areas.

Diphtheria is a bacterial infection that can cause severe respiratory problems and, if untreated, can lead to death. Vaccination remains the most effective method of prevention.

Residents have appealed to the Niger State government and relevant health agencies to act swiftly to prevent further loss of life, while medical teams continue efforts to contain the outbreak.

The Ministry of Health has intensified awareness campaigns, urging parents to vaccinate their children and report suspected cases promptly.
