Kwara Fire Service Contains Potential Disaster After Petrol Tanker Accident

A potentially catastrophic incident was narrowly averted on Tuesday evening when the Kwara State Fire Service responded swiftly to a petrol tanker accident along the Ilorin-Bode-Saadu-Jebba Expressway at Oko-Olowo.

The tanker, carrying 45,000 liters of premium motor spirit, lost control around 6:36 p.m. due to a mechanical fault that caused brake failure.

The driver skillfully maneuvered the vehicle into a roadside gutter, but not before the tanker suffered significant fuel spillage.

Thanks to the prompt and professional intervention of the Kwara State Fire Service, a major fire disaster was prevented.

The team quickly drenched the surroundings and the tanker to prevent ignition, ensuring public safety. The spilled fuel was safely transferred into another tanker, averting a potentially disastrous outcome.

Several shops and businesses near the scene were protected from harm due to the firefighters’ swift response. The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Falade John Olumuyiwa, praised the firefighters’ quick thinking and urged motorists, especially tanker drivers, to prioritize regular vehicle maintenance.

He also advised the public to exercise caution around accident scenes involving petroleum products and to alert the Fire Service immediately in emergencies.

This incident comes just days after a fire ravaged an oil station in Lagos, highlighting the importance of safety measures and emergency preparedness.
