FCT Resident Doctors Embark on Seven-Day Warning Strike Over Systemic Failures

Medical services across the Federal Capital Territory may face disruptions as resident doctors have declared a seven-day warning strike, citing years of neglect and systemic collapse in the health sector.
The strike was announced on Monday in a communiqué signed by the President of the Association of Resident Doctors, FCT chapter, Dr. George Ebong, and other members of the executive council.
According to the doctors, the FCT health system is “plagued by long-standing systemic failures” that require urgent and comprehensive reforms. They lamented that frontline medical workers continue to bear the brunt of poor infrastructure, inadequate staffing, and chronic underfunding.
Dr. Ebong explained that resident doctors are under mounting pressure, with many forced to cover multiple departments at once due to severe manpower shortages. This, he warned, is not only unsustainable but also dangerous for both healthcare providers and patients.
The doctors stressed that the warning strike is aimed at drawing the attention of relevant authorities to their plight and pushing for concrete action before the situation deteriorates further.
Hospitals in the FCT are expected to operate skeletal services during the industrial action, raising concerns over the possible impact on patients who rely heavily on public health facilities.
