INEC Uncovers 27,817 Multiple Voter Registrations in Anambra

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed that it uncovered 27,817 cases of multiple voter registrations in Anambra State during the recently concluded Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise conducted ahead of the November 2025 governorship election. The commission explained that the discovery followed the use of its Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS), which screened and cleaned up entries to prevent duplication and ensure the credibility of the voters’ register. According to INEC, a total of 168,187 applications were received during the registration exercise held between July 8 and 20, 2025. After subjecting the data to biometric scrutiny and a public display for claims and objections between July 26 and August 1, only 146,353 applications were found to be valid. This figure comprises 140,370 new registrants and 5,983 transfers from other states, while the 27,817 duplicates were expunged from the register. The commission noted that the state’s register of voters, which stood at 2,656,437 before the exercise, has now increased to 2,802,790 following the addition of valid new registrants and transfers. It also confirmed that Idemili North remains the local government area with the highest number of registered voters, followed closely by Awka South and Ogbaru. INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, assured that Permanent Voter Cards for those newly registered, those who applied for transfers, and those who requested replacements will be ready for collection well ahead of the November 8 governorship election. He emphasized that the commission is determined to maintain transparency and integrity in the electoral process, stressing that the removal of invalid entries demonstrates INEC’s commitment to delivering a credible and reliable voters’ register for Anambra State.
