Bauchi Constructs Alternative Road Linking North-East, North-West After Flood Devastation

The Bauchi State Government has commenced the construction of an alternative road linking the North-East and North-West regions as part of efforts to mitigate the impact of devastating floods that destroyed major highways in the state.

Bauchi, one of the states worst affected by last year’s rainy season, witnessed the collapse of critical road infrastructure after bridges and culverts were washed away, cutting off transport and trade routes and disrupting socio-economic activities across the two regions.

To address the situation, the government awarded the construction of a 24-kilometre road expected to connect several communities and serve as a reliable alternative route for commuters and businesses.

Speaking during a media tour of the project site on Sunday, the Project Manager of Habibu Engineering Company, Engr. Waelyanes Ali, said the project is already 90 per cent complete. He noted that the swampy terrain posed a major engineering challenge but assured that the company had deployed the necessary expertise and equipment to deliver a durable road.

“This project is crucial because the collapsed bridges rendered many communities inaccessible and disrupted economic activities. Despite the terrain challenges, we are on track to deliver a solid alternative route for the state and the country at large,” Ali explained.

The road, when completed, is expected to ease the movement of goods and services between the North-East and North-West regions, reducing the pressure on existing highways and restoring economic lifelines cut off by last year’s flooding.

Residents and local traders have expressed optimism that the project will not only improve access but also boost commerce, agriculture, and security in the affected areas.

The Bauchi State Government reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening infrastructure resilience against future floods, noting that road construction and rehabilitation remain a priority in its development agenda.
