Nigeria Edge Rwanda in Hard-Fought World Cup Qualifier

Nigeria’s Super Eagles boosted their hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup after securing a narrow 1–0 victory over Rwanda on Saturday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
The match, billed as a must-win for the Eagles following a shaky start to their qualifying campaign, was tense from the outset. Rwanda set up with defensive discipline, frustrating the hosts and limiting clear chances in the opening half.
Nigeria were dealt a major blow in the 35th minute when star forward Victor Osimhen limped off injured. His replacement, Cyriel Dessers, struggled initially to find rhythm against the stubborn Rwandan backline.
The decisive moment arrived six minutes into the second half. Full-back Ola Aina drove a low effort towards goal, and though Rwanda’s goalkeeper managed a parry, substitute striker Tolu Arokodare reacted quickest to bundle the ball over the line. The strike proved enough to secure all three points, sparking wild celebrations among the home fans in Uyo.
Head coach Eric Chelle, who made bold selection decisions on the night including leaving captain William Troost-Ekong on the bench—entrusted Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi with the armband. His midfield presence helped Nigeria maintain control in key moments.
Despite the narrow margin, the victory marked Nigeria’s second win of the qualifiers, moving them up the Group C standings and keeping their World Cup ambitions firmly on track.
The Super Eagles will now turn their attention to their next qualifying fixture, with fitness concerns surrounding Osimhen likely to dominate the build-up.
