Reconstruction of Lagos International Airport Begins , FAAN Issues Travel Advisory

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced the commencement of reconstruction work at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.
In a travel advisory released on Friday, FAAN urged passengers to arrive at the airport well ahead of their departure times to avoid delays and missed flights as a result of disruptions caused by the ongoing renovations.
The project, which is part of a wider infrastructure upgrade in Nigeria’s aviation sector, follows the approval of over N900 billion by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on August 1. Rehabilitation of MMIA’s Terminal One is a key component of the programme.
Minister of Aviation.andnAerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, explained that the reconstruction would involve stripping the terminal down to its structural base and rebuilding all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
The upgrade, estimated at N712.25 billion, is expected to be completed within 22 months.
“To ensure a smooth travel experience, we kindly request that passengers leave early for the airport to avoid missing flights, obey all traffic instructions to aid traffic flow, and park vehicles properly in designated car park areas,” FAAN said in the advisory.
The authority also cautioned that only passengers should access the airport during the reconstruction period due to limited space, appealing to travellers for cooperation and understanding.
The MMIA, Nigeria’s busiest airport, serves as a critical hub for both domestic and international travel.
