Plateau Local Government Elections Holds September 1, 2026

The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) has announced that the forthcoming local government elections are slated for Tuesday, September 1, 2026.

 

This proclamation, delivered by the Chairman of PLASIEC, Mr. Plangji Daniel Cishak, during a press conference at the commission’s headquarters in Jos on Thursday, adheres to Section 33(1) of the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission Law, which necessitates the issuance of election notices no less than three hundred and sixty (360) days prior to the election date.

 

Mr. Cishak elucidated that the election date was selected in accordance with Section 19(2) of the PLASIEC Law 2024, which mandates that elections for the specified positions must occur no later than thirty (30) days before the incumbent’s term concludes.

 

He further stated, “The ultimate deadline for conducting elections in the Local Government Councils within Plateau State is September 1, 2026.”

 

His address further included, “In pursuit of its mandate and in adherence to Sections 15, 19, 21, and 33 of the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission Law, 2024, along with Section 197(1)(B) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), and the Electoral Act, 2022, the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) hereby informs the leadership of all political parties and the general populace that elections will transpire across the seventeen (17) Local Government Councils of Plateau State on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM.”

 

“By virtue of the authority vested in the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (hereinafter referred to as ‘the Commission’) by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), and the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission Law 2024, alongside all empowering statutes, the Commission thus issues this Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2026 Local Government Elections in Plateau State.”

 

Subsequently, the collection of nomination forms (Form PEC 001 & Form PEC 4C) for candidates by political parties is scheduled from Monday, February 2, 2026, to Friday, February 6, 2026, pursuant to Sections 34 and 35 of the PLASIEC Law, 2024.

 

“Submission of Nomination Forms (Form PEC 001 & Form PEC 4C) for candidates by political parties will occur from Monday, February 9, 2026, to Monday, March 2, 2026, in accordance with Section 35 of the PLASIEC Law, 2024, and Section 29(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022.”

 

All subsequent activities will proceed in the prescribed sequence, culminating in the publication of the list of qualified/cleared candidates by PLASIEC on Thursday, March 19, 2026, under Section 39(2) & (3) of the PLASIEC Law, 2024, with the reception of appeal cases by PLASIEC on Friday, March 20, 2026, pursuant to Section 39(2) & (3) of the PLASIEC Law, 2024.

 

The election day is confirmed for Tuesday, September 1, 2026, from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, as per Section 33 of the PLASIEC Law, 2024.
