NYSC Resumes Arrears Payments to Corps Members After Two-Month Break

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has resumed the disbursement of arrears to corps members, marking the first payment since June 3, when the process was suspended.
The resumption ends weeks of uncertainty and growing frustration among service participants who had awaited the back payments.
The arrears, which cover the period from July 2024 to March 2025, are based on the recently approved increase in the monthly allowance to ₦77,000. Funding delays had held back the rollout of the new wage, leaving thousands of corps members and recent graduates in limbo.
Earlier in April, NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, reassured participants at the Batch A 2025 Pre-Mobilisation Workshop that no one would be left out of the adjustment.
He explained that the new allowance would apply retroactively and that corps members who had already completed their service would still receive arrears since their bank details were securely held by the scheme.
The resumed payments have been met with relief among beneficiaries, many of whom said the financial strain of the delay had worsened under rising living costs.
One former corps member noted that beyond the money, the payment served as recognition of their service at a time when morale had been waning.
For many young Nigerians, the NYSC allowance plays a crucial role in easing the financial burden of the service year. The renewed commitment to payments has been interpreted as a sign that the government is responsive to the welfare of its youth, even if delays still pose challenges.
By fulfilling its promise, the NYSC hopes to restore trust and ensure stability within the programme, which continues to serve as a key pillar of national unity and youth development.
