FG Issues Flood Alert for 14 States as China Donates $1m Relief Support

The Federal Ministry of Environment has issued a flood alert for 14 states, warning that 43 locations across the country could experience heavy rainfall and possible flooding between September 4 and September 8, 2025.
The alert, released on Thursday by the National Flood Early Warning Centre and signed by Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, cautioned residents in vulnerable areas to take precautionary measures.
Flooding remains one of Nigeria’s most pressing environmental challenges, often leading to mass displacement, loss of farmlands, and outbreaks of waterborne diseases. In recent years, heavy rainfall combined with poor drainage systems has worsened the situation, leaving thousands homeless.
According to the ministry, the states likely to be affected include Ebonyi (Afikpo), Cross River (Edor, Ikom, Itigidi, Akpap), Kano (Gwarzo, Karaye), Zamfara (Anka, Gummi, Kaura Namoda, Maradun, Shinkafi, Bukkuyum), Taraba (Dampar, Duchi, Garkowa, Gassol, Gembu, Gun Gun Bodel, Kambari, Mayo Ranewo, Mutum Biyu, Bandawa, Ngaruwa), Abia (Eziama, Umuahia), Yobe (Geidam, Kanama, Potiskum), Plateau (Langtang, Shendam, Wase), Borno (Ngala), Imo (Okigwe, Otoko), Niger (Sarki Pawa), Sokoto (Sokoto, Wamakko, Isa, Shagari, Makira), Kaduna (Kafanchan), and Akwa Ibom (Oron).
The warning comes as the Federal Government intensifies flood relief efforts following recent donations. On Wednesday, the Chinese government provided a $1 million grant to support victims in the northern states.
Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Bagudu, who signed the exchange notes with the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, in Abuja, described the intervention as timely.
“This support will complement the government’s drive to deliver relief materials and rebuild livelihoods in severely impacted communities,” Bagudu said. He assured that the funds would be managed transparently, guided by a monitoring and evaluation framework jointly developed with the Chinese Embassy.
Ambassador Dunhai, in his remarks, expressed China’s solidarity with Nigeria, noting that both countries have recently suffered devastating floods. “In times of difficulty, China and Nigeria always stand together,” he said.
Authorities have urged residents in flood-prone communities to remain alert and adhere to safety advisories to minimize casualties and damage during the rainy season.
