Ekiti First Lady Condemns Killing of Woman in Efon Alaaye, Calls for End to Gender-Based Violence

The wife of Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Olayemi Oyebanji, has condemned the alleged killing of Mrs. Modupe Alasin of Efon Alaaye, reportedly murdered by her husband after a domestic dispute.

In a post on X, the First Lady described the incident as a cruel act and a painful reminder of the urgent need to end gender-based violence in society.

“No woman’s life should be cut short by violence,” she wrote, stressing that Ekiti State would never tolerate such acts.

Dr. Oyebanji disclosed that she had directed the Ekiti State Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Management Committee to intensify preventive interventions, strengthen survivor support services, and expand sensitization campaigns across communities.

She also urged the Ekiti State Police Command to ensure a swift and impartial investigation that would deliver justice for the victim.

The First Lady, who is widely recognised as an advocate for women’s rights and empowerment, has consistently championed issues around education, health, and gender equity in the state.

Since her husband, Governor Biodun Oyebanji, assumed office in October 2022, she has worked closely with civil society groups and state institutions to push for stronger measures against gender-based violence, while also promoting social protection initiatives for vulnerable women and children.

Beyond her role as the Governor’s wife, Dr. Oyebanji has built a reputation as a women’s advocate and academic. She has often spoken about the need for cultural change, improved reporting systems, and community-driven sensitization to combat abuse in homes and workplaces.

Reaffirming that support is available, she appealed directly to victims of abuse not to remain silent.

“To every woman or girl feeling unsafe: your voice matters, and help is available. Let us all speak up, report abuse, and stand united to end this menace,” she said.

The incident has added to mounting concerns over rising cases of domestic violence across Nigeria, where rights groups have repeatedly called for stronger enforcement of existing laws and broader awareness to protect women and girls.
