NSIB Begins Probe Of Abuja Train Derailment, Confirms 12 Injuries

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched a probe into the derailment of an Abuja-bound train, confirming that twelve passengers sustained injuries during the incident.

The accident, which occurred on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, between Kubwa and Asham stations in the Federal Capital Territory, caused panic among commuters and disrupted rail services along the busy Abuja–Kaduna corridor.

Confirming the development, the Director-General of the NSIB, Capt. Alex Badeh Jr., said a team of investigators had been dispatched to the site to commence a full-scale inquiry into the causes of the derailment.

“Our go-team has already arrived at the site to collect evidence, conduct interviews, and examine all possible contributing factors. The investigation will be thorough and transparent, and safety recommendations will be issued to prevent a recurrence,” Badeh stated.

According to NSIB, no deaths were recorded in the incident, but twelve passengers suffered varying degrees of injury and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Emergency services, including officials of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), security agencies, and medical teams, were mobilized immediately to assist affected passengers.

The Abuja Kaduna railway line has remained a critical transport corridor since its commissioning, but recent safety concerns including this derailment have renewed calls for stricter monitoring and improved maintenance of the rail infrastructure.

NSIB has assured the public that details of its findings will be released upon conclusion of the investigation.
