Six Ogun Wrestlers Poised for Glory at 9th National Youth Games in Asaba

The spotlight is turning to Ogun State as a team of wrestlers prepares to compete at the 9th National Youth Games, currently underway in Asaba, Delta State.

The athletes, drawn from across the state after a rigorous selection process, are tipped to be among Ogun’s medal hopefuls at the youth sporting fiesta.

Ogun State Wrestling Association chairman, Dr. Abimbola Babalola, recently expressed confidence in the ability of the contingent, urging them to remain disciplined and to see themselves as ambassadors of the state. He noted that the wrestlers had impressed during trials and were ready to prove their strength against the best young athletes from across the country.

The National Youth Games, declared open last week at the Stephen Keshi Stadium by President Bola Tinubu, features thousands of athletes competing in various sporting disciplines including athletics, swimming, football, boxing, gymnastics, and wrestling.

The event serves as a breeding ground for future national and international stars, with the wrestling category traditionally attracting strong competition.

Ogun State has a history of producing exceptional talent at the Games. At the previous edition, athletes from the state earned medals across multiple events, with their performance drawing praise and financial rewards from the state government.

This year, expectations are high that the wrestlers, both male and female, will add to that success story and strengthen Ogun’s standing in the national medal table.

The presence of the six wrestlers in Asaba underscores Ogun’s commitment to grassroots sports development and talent discovery. As the Games progress, attention will be fixed on whether these young fighters can grapple their way to the podium and bring more sporting pride to the Gateway State.
