Ogun State Reportedly Acquires Bombardier CRJ 900 for Gateway Air

The Ogun State Government has allegedly acquired a Bombardier CRJ 900 aircraft to operate under its proposed airline, Gateway Air, signaling an ambitious step in its aviation development plans.
The CRJ 900, a regional jet produced by Canadian aerospace manufacturer Bombardier, is capable of seating up to 90 passengers depending on its configuration, which can range from single to triple class.
Industry experts estimate that a brand-new CRJ 900 costs around $40 million, while pre-owned models are typically priced between $10 and $15 million. Older, third-hand versions of the jet can go for as low as $3–8 million.
Reports further suggest that another CRJ 900 seen parked beside the alleged Gateway Air aircraft belongs to Ogun-born billionaire and ValueJet Chairman, Kunle Soname, who recently acquired the jet for his privately-owned airline.
ValueJet already operates Bombardier aircraft within Nigeria’s domestic market, and its involvement could prove significant in the operation of Ogun’s planned airline services.
The development, if confirmed, would represent a bold move by Ogun State as it seeks to position its Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport as a hub for both passenger and cargo traffic. The airport has already recorded test flights and is preparing for full-scale operations.
However, as of now, the reported acquisition remains unverified by official government or aviation regulatory bodies. The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has previously cautioned states about making premature announcements regarding certification and aircraft acquisitions without formal approvals.
The entry of Gateway Air would make Ogun one of the few Nigerian states to directly invest in aviation, following in the footsteps of Akwa Ibom’s Ibom Air, which has successfully grown its fleet and routes since its inception.
