Panic as Two Injured in Iyana Isolo Tanker Explosion

The Iyana-Isolo axis of the ever-busy Apapa–Oshodi Expressway in Lagos descended into chaos on Sunday afternoon when a diesel-laden tanker overturned and went up in flames, leaving at least two people injured.

Eyewitnesses said the tanker, which was heading inwards Oshodi from Mile 2, lost control while the driver attempted to park by the roadside. In the process, the vehicle rammed into a commercial bus, toppled into a gutter, and spilled its contents before erupting in a massive explosion.

The resulting inferno engulfed the tanker, a container-laden trailer, and parts of the expressway, sending terrified commuters and passersby scampering for safety.

The impact caused heavy gridlock as motorists abandoned their vehicles to escape the spreading flames.

Amateur footage obtained by Channels Television captured the chaotic scene, showing the tanker driver lying motionless on the ground with severe injuries. A co-passenger seated beside him was also confirmed to have sustained injuries.

Both victims were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.

Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Federal Fire Service, and operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), swiftly mobilised to the scene to contain the blaze and restore order.

Firefighters battled for hours to bring the flames under control, preventing the fire from spreading to nearby buildings and vehicles.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service said quick intervention by emergency teams helped avert a major tragedy.

“The fire has been successfully put out, and recovery operations are ongoing. Two people were rescued with injuries and taken for medical attention,” the spokesperson said.

The accident added to the long list of tanker-related mishaps in Lagos, which have claimed lives and destroyed properties in recent years. Authorities have repeatedly warned drivers of articulated vehicles to exercise caution, especially along high-traffic corridors like the Apapa–Oshodi Expressway.

As of press time, traffic remains gridlocked along the axis, with security operatives directing motorists to alternative routes.
