Ondo Governor Declares Neutrality in Chieftaincy Matters, Presents Instrument to Alale of Akungba

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to neutrality in chieftaincy matters, emphasizing that the government will not take sides in traditional disputes.
He made this statement while presenting the instrument of office to Oba Isiaka Adu as the Alale of Akungba Akoko in Akoko South-West Local Government Area.
The presentation ceremony marked the end of a long-standing chieftaincy tussle that had lingered for decades. Governor Aiyedatiwa explained that the decision to recognize Oba Adu was based on favorable court judgments that validated his claim, rather than government preference for any particular ruling house.
“Your ascension to the throne is a service to your people,” Aiyedatiwa advised Oba Adu. “Use the staff of office to promote peace, unity, and cohesion in your community, and avoid victimizing perceived opponents.”
The governor’s action follows the passing of Oba Sunday Adeyeye Ajimo in March 2025, which created a vacancy in the throne. Although the Olugbade Ruling House was next in line to produce a monarch, the government acted in accordance with existing court rulings that supported Oba Adu’s claim.
In his response, Oba Adu expressed gratitude to God and the state government for making his installation possible. He described the occasion as historic, noting that it fulfilled the aspiration of the Agure royal family dating back to 1951. Oba Adu pledged to prioritize unity, peace, and development in Akungba during his reign.
Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs Amidu Takuro praised the governor for respecting due process in resolving the dispute. Akoko South-West Local Government Chairman Ayo Ajana welcomed the development, describing it as a new beginning for Akungba.
