Nigeria’s Gas Production Hits 7.6 bscfd — NUPRC
Nigeria’s natural gas production climbed to 7.59 billion standard cubic feet per day (bscfd) in July 2025, according to the latest data released by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).
The report shows that more than 90 percent of the gas produced was utilised for domestic supply, exports, and field operations, while only 7.16 percent was flared during the month.
The regulator attributed the improvement to stricter enforcement measures and initiatives such as the Nigerian Gas Flare Commercialisation Programme (NGFCP), aimed at converting wasted gas into useful energy.
Between January and June 2025, Nigeria recorded about 1.37 trillion standard cubic feet (scf) of gas production, with utilisation averaging above 91 percent. NUPRC noted that the figures underscore the central role of gas in powering industries, generating electricity, and meeting export obligations.
Energy experts have welcomed the July data, describing it as a boost for the country’s economy. They stressed that increased gas supply would help stabilise power generation, provide feedstock for industries, and strengthen Nigeria’s position in the global LNG market.
However, challenges such as inadequate pipeline networks, insufficient processing plants, and security issues in producing areas remain key obstacles. Analysts warn that without significant infrastructure investment, Nigeria may struggle to fully harness its vast gas reserves.
The NUPRC has reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating routine flaring by 2030 and expanding midstream facilities to ensure more reliable energy supply for both domestic consumption and exports.
With output reaching 7.6 bscfd in July and flaring at its lowest in years, Nigeria is gradually moving closer to its ambition of becoming a leading gas hub in Africa.
