NAFDAC Shuts Down Illegal Lagos Skincare Factory

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed an illegal cosmetic production facility, Shine Shine Skincare, in Agege, Lagos State, after uncovering unregistered and hazardous bleaching products manufactured under unsafe conditions.

According to a statement posted on its official X handle on Sunday, the agency said its enforcement team discovered a variety of products falsely marketed as “organic” and safe for use, despite being produced in violation of Good Manufacturing Practices.

The facility, owned by Devine Nikiruka Adebayo, who runs the brand’s Instagram page with over 100,000 followers, was found to be producing unregistered cosmetic items such as Peeling White Scrub, Glass Scrub Wash, Antiaging Radiant Glow, and Customised Whitening Black Soap.

Laboratory tests carried out by NAFDAC revealed that the products contained unsafe levels of banned substances. The agency warned that many such deceptively formulated skincare products often include corticosteroid-based bleaching agents, which pose serious health risks.

“Investigations revealed that such deceptively formulated products often contain unsafe levels of banned substances, including corticosteroid-based bleaching agents, which can cause severe health risks such as skin thinning, delayed healing, and increased vulnerability to injury,” NAFDAC stated.

The regulatory body urged consumers to exercise caution when purchasing cosmetic and other regulated products, stressing the importance of buying only NAFDAC-approved items to safeguard public health.
