Morayo Afolabi-Brown Retracts Earlier Criticism of Peter Obi, Says Remarks Were Based on Ignorance
Media personality and former host of TVC’s Your View, Morayo Afolabi-Brown, has admitted that her past criticism of Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi was unfounded and made without proper knowledge of his record.
Afolabi-Brown made the disclosure during a recent interview with media entrepreneur Chude Jideonwo on his #WithChude series, where she reflected on her career, controversies, and personal struggles. She explained that her initial comments about Obi were made in error and only later did she learn more about his record as governor of Anambra State.
“It was because I did not know him. After I made that comment, people called me and said, ‘Morayo, do you realise that when he was governor, he actually served us?’ … I said, ‘Oh, I did not know,’” she said.
The broadcaster, who anchored Your View for over a decade before stepping down in 2024, noted that the experience taught her the importance of fact-checking and avoiding premature judgments, especially as a public commentator.
She added that she had considered leaving the show for years but only made the final decision last year, describing it as a defining moment in her professional journey.
In the interview, Afolabi-Brown also spoke about her battle with depression, revealing that she once struggled with suicidal thoughts as a result of personal and professional pressures.
She recalled walking along the expressway at one point, wishing for an accident to end her pain. She explained that stepping away from the show was a deliberate step to reclaim her sense of purpose and protect her well-being.
She further addressed controversies from her career, acknowledging that some of her public statements were made without full information.
According to her, private conversations and interventions helped her gain clarity, leading her to correct some of her earlier positions and apologise where necessary.
Her admission regarding Peter Obi has continued to generate public reactions, with analysts noting the significance of a media personality of her influence acknowledging such an error.
Observers say her retraction reinforces the responsibility of broadcasters and journalists to provide balanced and informed commentary on political figures and national issues.
