Governor Otu Orders Investigation into Police Killing of Onyekachi Mba

The Cross River State government has vehemently denounced and ordered an investigation into what it perceives as a “flagrant act of lawlessness and abuse of power” following the untimely demise of 23-year-old Onyekachi Moses Mba in Calabar.
Erasmus Ekpang, the State Information Commissioner, expressed profound sorrow in a statement over the young man’s death, who succumbed to severe injuries allegedly inflicted by the reckless actions of a police officer after enduring several days of struggle in the hospital.
The statement revealed that Governor Otu has ordered the immediate apprehension and investigation of the officer involved.
“His Excellency, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, has instructed the Commissioner of Police to facilitate the prompt arrest of the implicated officer and to conduct a comprehensive investigation into this egregious misconduct.
“Impunity finds no refuge under this administration. Those charged with safeguarding lives must not become agents of fear and tragedy,” the release emphasized.
According to the statement, Governor Otu cautioned that any officer who betrays the sacred duty of protection and public trust would be subject to the full force of the law.
“Let it be known unequivocally: this government will not shield any state agent who undermines justice,” he declared.
Mrs. Victoria Mba, the mother of the deceased, has, however, protested, asserting that her son was on a special evangelical mission to preach the gospel and convey a vision he claimed to have for the state with the governor.
She stated that during her son’s evangelism, he was brutalized and shot by a police officer stationed at the residence of the state governor before succumbing to his injuries in the hospital.
She refuted rumors that her son was mentally unstable.
When reached for comment, the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Igris Ewa, indicated that the State Police Commissioner has mandated a thorough investigation of the incident.
In a succinct statement, he said, “The case file has already been forwarded to the DPP for legal advice. That’s the update, please.”
