FG Unveils New Curriculum for Basic, Secondary Education

The Federal Ministry of Education has announced the completion of a comprehensive review of curricula for basic, senior secondary, and technical education in Nigeria.
The new curriculum aims to improve the quality of education and make it more relevant to the needs of learners in today’s rapidly changing world.
According to the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Said Ahmad, the review process was carried out in collaboration with key stakeholders, including the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, Universal Basic Education Commission, National Senior Secondary Education Commission, and National Board for Technical Education.
The new curriculum features a range of subjects that students can offer at different levels of education. At the primary school level, pupils in Primary 1-3 can offer 9-10 subjects, while those in Primary 4-6 can offer 10-12 subjects. Junior secondary school students can offer 12-14 subjects, while senior secondary school students can offer 8-9 subjects. Technical school students can offer 9-11 subjects.
The Minister emphasized that the revised curriculum will reduce content overload and create more learning time for students. This, she said, reflects the government’s commitment to delivering quality education that is relevant, practical, and responsive to the needs of learners.
The Federal Ministry of Education has assured the public that the revised curriculum will be implemented with strict monitoring to guarantee effective adoption and a smooth transition in schools nationwide. The Ministry commends all stakeholders for their commitment and teamwork in the review process, which has produced a stronger, future-focused curriculum for Nigerian learners.
The new curriculum is expected to have a positive impact on the education sector in Nigeria, providing students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in an increasingly complex and interconnected world.
