Navy Dismisses Officer, Sentences Him to 3 Years for Affair With Colleague’s Wife

The Nigerian Navy has dismissed a serving officer, a Lieutenant (names withheld), and sentenced him to three years’ imprisonment after he was found guilty of engaging in a scandalous sexual relationship with the wife of a fellow officer.
The punishment was handed down following the conclusion of a Special Court Martial (SCM), which sat to deliberate on charges brought against the officer.
He was arraigned on four counts, including having sexual relations with a service personnel’s wife, scandalous conduct, and deceiving a witness.
According to military sources, the SCM found the officer guilty after a comprehensive review of evidence and witness testimony. The verdict was subjected to a legal review, which confirmed that the trial was conducted in line with military justice procedures and that the accused was properly arraigned.
His dismissal from service and the three-year jail sentence officially took effect on November 23, 2024. The Nigerian Navy formally implemented the punishment on Friday, August 29, 2025, during a parade ceremony at the Nigerian Navy Institute of Technology (NNIT), Sapele, Delta State.
Officials at the event emphasized that the ruling underscores the Navy’s zero tolerance for indiscipline and its commitment to upholding the highest standards of conduct among personnel.
“The Navy will not condone acts that tarnish the image of the service or undermine the core values of discipline, loyalty and integrity,” a senior officer who attended the parade told reporters.
The judgment serves as a stern warning to serving personnel that breaches of military ethics, especially those involving scandalous conduct, would be met with decisive sanctions.
