Morocco Clinch Record Third CHAN Title with Thrilling Win Over Madagascar
Morocco cemented their dominance in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Saturday after edging debutant finalists Madagascar 3-2 in a pulsating final at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
The Atlas Lions, who previously lifted the trophy in 2018 and 2020, became the first nation to win the competition three times. Their victory was powered by the brilliance of star striker Oussama Lamlaoui, whose double strike not only secured the win but also crowned him the tournament’s top scorer with six goals.
Lamlaoui’s second goal was the defining moment of the 2025 CHAN. With Madagascar pushing forward in search of an equaliser, he spotted goalkeeper Michel Ramandimbisoa off his line and unleashed a spectacular 40-yard effort that sailed into the net — a strike applauded even by some Malagasy players.
CAF described the goal as the moment of the tournament, and it sealed Morocco’s $3.5 million prize money.
Madagascar, meanwhile, earned $1.2 million and the admiration of the continent after their fairytale run to the final.
The match lived up to its billing with a frantic start. Morocco opened the scoring inside 15 minutes when Lamlaoui pounced on a precise Youssef Mehri pass to give his side the lead.
Madagascar, however, showed resilience and levelled through Toky Rakotondraibe, who capitalised on a defensive lapse to ignite wild celebrations.
Parity did not last long. Sabir Bougrine restored Morocco’s advantage before halftime with a low drive past Ramandimbisoa, once again assisted by the influential Mehri.
The Atlas Lions appeared to be in full control after Lamlaoui’s wonder strike, but Madagascar refused to fade. Lalaina Rafanomezantsoa pulled one back with 12 minutes left, setting up a tense finale. The islanders pressed hard, forcing two late corners in stoppage time, but Morocco’s defence held firm to seal the historic crown.
The final concluded a month-long tournament co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda — the first time the CHAN was staged across three countries. The “Pamoja Edition” lived up to its name, drawing packed stadiums and delivering a celebration of African football.
As fireworks lit up the Nairobi sky, Morocco stood tallest once again, blending resilience, tactical discipline, and individual brilliance. For Madagascar, the silver medal marked not just a reward but also a statement — proof that fairytales remain possible in African football.
