Tinubu Congratulates Babalola on Election as Rotary International President

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Nigerian engineer and philanthropist, Olayinka Hakeem Babalola, on his election as President-Elect of Rotary International for the 2026–2027 term.

Babalola, a member of the Rotary Club of Trans Amadi, Port Harcourt, was selected to lead the 120-year-old humanitarian organization following the resignation of SangKoo Yun on health grounds. He will officially assume office on July 1, 2026, becoming only the second Nigerian and African to hold the prestigious position.

In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described Babalola’s election as a “historic milestone” and a source of national pride.

He lauded the engineer’s decades of professional excellence and service through the Nigerian Society of Engineers, as well as his dedication to Rotary’s mission of advancing peace and humanitarian development.

“This achievement is a testament to his years of service, his laudable philanthropic initiatives, and his relentless pursuit of projects that have impacted lives, strengthened communities, and advanced human dignity,” Tinubu said.

The President also emphasized that Babalola’s elevation should inspire Nigerian youth, proving that global recognition and leadership are attainable through integrity, vision, and dedication to service. He assured him of Nigeria’s full support as he prepares to take charge of Rotary International, urging him to deepen partnerships and continue promoting initiatives that transform societies.

Babalola’s election marks a new chapter in Rotary’s history on the continent, highlighting Africa’s growing influence in global humanitarian leadership. His presidency is expected to bring renewed attention to the challenges and opportunities facing developing nations, particularly in areas such as education, health, and community development.
