Methodist Church to Establish University in Abia, Seeks State Partnership

The Methodist Church of Nigeria has unveiled plans to set up a new university in Umuimenyi, Bende Local Government Area, with an appeal for collaboration from the Abia State Government.
The Prelate of the Church, Most Rev. Oliver Abah, made this known on Thursday during a courtesy call on Governor Alex Otti in Umuahia. He explained that the Church had already mapped out the project site but raised concerns over encroachment in the surrounding areas of Lodu, Lohum, and Nkpa, urging the state to intervene against land speculators.
According to him, the Methodist Church has historically pioneered the establishment of schools, health facilities, and social service centers across Nigeria, and the proposed university would further strengthen Abia’s educational sector.
He emphasized that the project would empower young people with knowledge and skills needed for national development, while also complementing the governor’s reforms in the state.
The cleric commended Otti for what he described as visible progress since assuming office, calling him a leader chosen by both divine will and popular mandate, and prayed for his continued success.
In his response, Governor Otti welcomed the initiative, pledging full support from his administration.
He highlighted education as a top priority of his government, noting that it consistently receives the highest allocation in the state budget.
“We are delighted with this development, and we assure you of our cooperation. The Methodist Church has played a key role in education and healthcare in Nigeria, and we are pleased to partner with you on this new university,” Otti stated.
