I Rejected Obi’s Cash Offer,.Claims Adeyanju, Faults Monetisation of Politics

Human rights lawyer and political activist, Deji Adeyanju, has alleged that Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, attempted to offer him money during the campaign period, but he turned it down.

Adeyanju, who made the claim in an interview on ChannelsTelevision, said Obi had invited him for a private meeting after persistent efforts to reach him while he was abroad.

According to him, during the meeting, he raised questions about corruption allegations and governance issues under Obi’s tenure as governor of Anambra State.

He recounted that after their discussion, Obi briefly left the room and returned with an envelope. “He offered me a small thing for coming, but I laughed and told him he didn’t know me. I don’t collect such things. If anything, I am the one who brings out money to support causes. I rejected it and left,” Adeyanju said.

The activist stressed that he had never publicly disclosed the incident until Obi’s team accused him of demanding ₦200 million during the election campaign an allegation he dismissed as false and malicious.

Adeyanju also criticised the conduct of Obi’s supporters, known as the “Obidient” movement, accusing them of fostering an atmosphere of harassment and hostility against dissenting voices.

He compared their tactics to the excesses of the Buhari era, describing the movement as intolerant and politically toxic.

He further challenged Obi to pursue legal action if he wished, insisting that truth would stand as his defence. “If he wants to do his worst, let him. I am not afraid,” Adeyanju said.
