Delta Lawmaker Slams Oil Companies for Snubbing Stakeholders’ Meeting

The Deputy Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Arthur Akpowowo, has expressed disappointment that oil companies operating in the state failed to attend a stakeholders’ meeting aimed at addressing the challenges facing host communities.

Akpowowo, who chaired the meeting organized by Search for Common Ground, urged participants to leverage the ongoing amendment of the Petroleum Industry Act to push for their demands.

He lamented the absence of oil company representatives, stating that their presence would have provided an opportunity for communities and stakeholders to air their grievances. He emphasized the importance of dialogue in resolving issues between oil companies and host communities.

The Chairman of Udu Local Government Area, Vincent Oyibode, suggested that effective leadership, strict implementation of existing laws, and amendments where necessary are crucial to resolving the lingering challenges.

He also advocated for the adoption of international best practices in environmental procedures to mitigate pollution in oil-producing areas.

The stakeholders’ meeting aimed to promote accountability and trust between oil companies and host communities. Participants discussed pathways to address challenges hindering accountability in past agreements and explored collaborative approaches to resolving identified issues.

The meeting highlighted the need for oil companies to engage with host communities and stakeholders to find mutually beneficial solutions. The absence of oil company representatives was seen as a missed opportunity for constructive dialogue and problem-solving.
