Boniface Left Out As Super Eagles Name Squad For World Cup Qualifiers

The Super Eagles have released their final 23-man squad for next month’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and Rwanda, with striker Victor Boniface a notable omission.
Head coach, Eric Chelle unveiled the list on Thursday, confirming the inclusion of key players such as Victor Osimhen, Alex Iwobi, Ademola Lookman, Wilfred Ndidi, Samuel Chukwueze, and team captain William Troost-Ekong. Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali also retained his spot despite recent injury concerns.
Nigeria will open camp on September 2 ahead of their first match against Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo, on September 6, before traveling to Bloemfontein to face South Africa on September 9.
Both fixtures are considered decisive as the Super Eagles, who currently sit fourth in Group C, push to revive their qualification hopes.
Boniface’s exclusion from the squad has drawn attention, especially as the Bayer Leverkusen striker has been in impressive form at club level.
His absence opens the door for forwards such as Cyriel Dessers, Tolu Arokodare, and Moses Simon, who are expected to lead Nigeria’s attack alongside Osimhen.
The squad also features youthful inclusions like Felix Agu and Benjamin Fredericks, reflecting Chelle’s intent to blend experience with emerging talent.
Nigeria, three-time African champions, must secure maximum points in both fixtures to strengthen their chances of reaching the 2026 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
