Minister of Interior Announces Lifetime Salary Benefits for Senior Retiring Officers

The Federal Government has approved a new welfare policy that grants lifetime salary benefits to senior officers retiring from the rank of Deputy Controller, Comptroller, or Commandant-General and above.

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, disclosed this on Thursday while addressing participants at the 2025 Ministerial Retreat, where he highlighted the ministry’s achievements and reiterated its commitment to strengthening institutional capacity across all agencies.

According to a statement signed by the Head of Corporate Services of the Federal Fire Service, DCF P.O. Abraham, the initiative was approved by President Bola Tinubu as part of efforts to improve the welfare of officers.

“In recognition of the welfare of senior officers, the minister announced that any officer retiring from the rank of Deputy Controller/Comptroller/Commandant-General will now receive lifetime salary benefits, a policy graciously approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the statement read.

Tunji-Ojo expressed appreciation to the President for his continued support, noting that the Renewed Hope Agenda has positively impacted all agencies under the ministry.

He further revealed that the ministry had cleared a backlog of promotions affecting officers for several years, with more than 50,000 officers promoted within the last two years. Moving forward, he said, officer progression will be guided by a new system that prioritises capacity and performance.

In line with institutional reforms, the minister announced the development of new training manuals and the commencement of construction for a world-class Fire Academy, designed to rival international institutions such as the Arizona Fire Academy.

He also stressed the importance of workplace mental health and assured officers of full support in addressing related challenges.

Additionally, Tunji-Ojo charged the Federal Fire Service to pursue partnerships with the private sector to enhance service delivery, modernise firefighting operations, and improve infrastructure development in Nigeria.
