Ebonyi State Hosts Landmark Retreat for Review of Nigeria’s Laws

Ebonyi State Governor, Rt. Hon. Bldr. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has welcomed distinguished guests to the 3rd Retreat of the Committee for the Review of the Laws of the Federation of Nigeria.
The retreat, held in Ebonyi State from August 26-29, 2025, aims to review and consolidate existing laws to create a modern and just legal framework for the country.
The Governor emphasized the importance of having laws that reflect the current realities and needs of the nation. He noted that the last consolidation of the Laws of the Federation was in 2004, and since then, Nigeria has experienced significant transformations in technology, economy, and governance.
The Committee’s work is crucial in shaping the country’s legal soul and building a framework that empowers citizens, protects freedoms, and guarantees fairness to all. The Governor praised the Committee’s diligence and patriotism, highlighting the technical study tour to LexisNexis in South Africa as a strategic move to benchmark against international standards.
The retreat provides an opportunity for the Committee to deliberate with foresight, courage, and inclusivity, and to imagine a Nigeria where laws are tools for the future, not relics of the past.
The outcome of the retreat is expected to have a significant impact on justice, democracy, and development in Nigeria.
The Governor declared the retreat open, expressing his hope that the Committee’s efforts will yield a body of laws that will stand the test of time and advance justice, strengthen democracy, and secure the future of Nigeria.
