Amaechi Throws Hat Into the Ring, Declares 2027 Presidential Bid

Former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has formally announced his ambition to contest the 2027 presidential election on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Amaechi made the declaration in Kano on Wednesday after a meeting with a coalition of traders, where he ruled out stepping aside for any aspirant during the party’s primary election.
“I will contest the ADC presidential primary, and by God’s grace, I hope to win so that I can face Tinubu in 2027. I am not stepping down for anyone. Let the people decide who they want to lead,” he said.
The former governor stressed that ADC must uphold internal democracy, insisting that a transparent contest would strengthen the party.
Amaechi also lashed out at the Bola Tinubu administration, accusing it of worsening economic hardship and failing to deliver inclusive governance. According to him, “Nigerians are tired because no one is happy under Tinubu, not even in Rivers or across the South. People are suffering everywhere.”
On federal appointments, he argued that power had been concentrated among a few individuals close to the president, leaving other regions marginalized.
When quizzed on zoning, Amaechi said the decision rests with the ADC leadership but maintained that he would remain in the race regardless of any arrangement.
Describing himself as one of the most qualified contenders, Amaechi stated that his candidacy would promote national unity. He dismissed claims that his political structure in Rivers had been weakened by Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, noting that the turnout at a recent ADC event in the state demonstrated his enduring popularity.
