Alcaraz Races into US Open Third Round as Djokovic, Sabalenka Advance

Defending champion, Carlos Alcaraz delivered a masterclass performance on Wednesday to power into the third round of the 2025 US Open, underlining his status as one of the top contenders for the title.
The world No. 2 needed just one hour and 36 minutes to dismantle Italy’s Mattia Bellucci in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, 6-3, on the Arthur Ashe Stadium court.
Alcaraz, who is aiming for his third Grand Slam crown, dictated play from start to finish with his trademark explosive forehands, deft drop shots, and relentless movement.
The 21-year-old Spaniard is on a potential collision course with Novak Djokovic, with both men drawn to meet in the semi-finals should the seedings hold.
Djokovic, meanwhile, was made to work harder for his ticket to the next round. The 24-time Grand Slam champion dropped the opening set against Hungarian qualifier Zsombor Piros before regrouping to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2. The Serbian veteran showcased his trademark resilience, tightening his serve and capitalizing on key break points to avoid a shock exit.
In the women’s draw, second seed, Aryna Sabalenka also progressed after a dominant display. The Belarusian powered past American Madison Brengle 6-2, 6-1, needing just over an hour to seal victory.
Sabalenka, last year’s US Open champion, remains a strong favourite to defend her crown.
With the early rounds wrapping up, the Flushing Meadows crowd is bracing for blockbuster clashes as the tournament edges closer to the business end.
Alcaraz and Djokovic’s contrasting paths to the third round have only added to the growing anticipation of a possible showdown between the two stars.
