Your Economic Policies Causing Nigerians to Groan, Resort to Suicide, PDP Lawmakers Tell Tinubu

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) caucus in the House of Representatives has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to urgently respond to the deepening hardship facing millions of Nigerians.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja after an emergency meeting on Monday, the opposition lawmakers decried what they described as the unbearable living conditions across the country, saying that citizens are “groaning in pain daily” under the weight of economic difficulties.

The caucus, led by Hon. Kingsley Chinda, said the situation has become so dire that some Nigerians, overwhelmed by hunger and despair, have resorted to suicide.

“Not only are killings on the rise, there is also a lot of hardship in this country and Nigerians are groaning in their pains daily. People are committing suicide because the government is not paying attention to them,” Chinda said, lamenting that the present administration has shown scant empathy for the suffering masses.

The lawmakers blamed the worsening hardship on recent government policies, including the removal of fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira, which they argue have triggered skyrocketing food prices, soaring transport fares, and shrinking household incomes.

They accused the Tinubu administration of failing to roll out adequate palliative measures to cushion the effects of its reforms.

The caucus also raised concerns over worsening insecurity, claiming that more than 10,000 lives have been lost to violent attacks, banditry, and terrorism in less than two years.

They criticized the president for what they described as his frequent absence during national crises, insisting that Nigeria requires a hands-on leader who is present and responsive to urgent challenges.

“We call on the president to wake up to his responsibilities. Nigerians can no longer wait for promises of a better tomorrow while they are starving today,” the caucus declared.

As part of their demands, the lawmakers urged the federal government to immediately implement emergency interventions such as food distribution, targeted cash support for vulnerable families, and stimulus measures to revive local industries and create jobs.

They also called for a coordinated national response to insecurity in order to restore public confidence and protect lives and property.
While government officials have defended Tinubu’s policies as tough but necessary steps to stabilise the economy for long-term growth, opposition lawmakers and civil society organisations argue that the administration must do more to shield citizens from immediate hardship. Labour unions and advocacy groups have in recent months warned that rising poverty, hunger, and unemployment could push the country toward greater instability.

The PDP caucus cautioned that if the hardship continues unchecked, public anger may escalate into widespread unrest, with potential political consequences for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“The welfare of Nigerians should be the top priority of any government,” the caucus said. “This is no longer about party politics but about saving lives and ensuring that people can live with dignity.
