Sweden Names Isak in World Cup Qualifier Squad, Back Him on Newcastle Strike

Sweden has named Alexander Isak in their squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Slovenia and Kosovo, despite the striker’s ongoing standoff with Newcastle United.

The 25-year-old has not featured for the Magpies this season and is currently training away from Eddie Howe’s first team after accusing the club of breaking promises made to him.

Isak has publicly declared his intention to leave St. James’ Park, fuelling speculation over a potential move to Liverpool.

Earlier this month, the forward said: “The relationship can’t continue,” making clear his stance that his future lies away from Newcastle.

Liverpool had a £110 million bid for the striker rejected, with reports suggesting a second offer could be made before the transfer deadline.

The Magpies, however, have denied making any agreement to sell Isak and insist the player is not for sale.

Despite the uncertainty, Sweden’s head coach Jon Dahl Tomasson expressed confidence in Isak’s ability to deliver on the international stage.

“I am very happy that Alexander Isak wants to be in the squad, he is a huge player,” Tomasson said. “The situation he is in is not perfect, and he has not trained with the team. But he is a player who can decide matches, and he wants to be part of our squad. The World Cup is important for Alexander Isak.”

The decision means Isak could return to competitive action in national colours next week, even while his Newcastle exile continues.

Also included in Tomasson’s squad is Arsenal forward Viktor Gyokeres, who netted his first two goals for the Gunners at the weekend.
