Nigeria and Brazil Partner on Space Technology

The Federal Government has emphasized the importance of space technology and exploration for Nigeria’s growth, security, and ability to address global challenges.

This was highlighted during President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to Brazil, where a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Nigeria and Brazil to enhance cooperation in space science and technology.

The agreement, signed by Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, and Brazil’s Science Minister, Mrs. Luciana Santos, aims to drive inclusive growth and prosperity through the use of satellites, rocketry, and data analytics.

The partnership will pave the way for joint satellite missions on agriculture, climate monitoring, and national security, as well as cooperation in space vehicle engineering and technology transfer.

The MoU also includes the deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for forest conservation and the use of Earth observation systems to enhance resilience against natural disasters and food crises.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva described the partnership as a bridge of innovation and solidarity between two nations of the Global South.

The Nigerian Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology noted that space technology is no longer a luxury but a necessity for national prosperity and security, citing its role in tackling climate change, food insecurity, and disaster management.

The partnership is expected to provide a powerful tool for Africa and Latin America to leapfrog into the future economy.
