Kaduna Govt Restates Backing for Creative Industry at Film Festival

The Kaduna State Government has reiterated its commitment to developing the creative industry as a strategic tool for youth empowerment and economic growth.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 8th Kaduna International Film Festival on Tuesday night, the Deputy Governor, Dr. Hadiza Balarabe, described the sector as a major driver of national development.

Balarabe, who was represented by the Commissioner for Youth Development, Gloria Ibrahim, said the state would continue to harness the potential of the industry to generate jobs, boost tourism, and create new opportunities for entrepreneurs.

“The creative industry is central to our development agenda. It provides jobs for young people, stimulates tourism, and opens doors for entrepreneurship,” she said.

The Deputy Governor commended the festival’s theme, Film for Social Change, describing it as both timely and profound. According to her, cinema extends beyond entertainment, serving as a tool for shaping values and inspiring action.

“Film speaks to the conscience of society. Nollywood has proven this. Today, our film and music industries contribute over ₦1.3 trillion to Nigeria’s GDP and employ more than 4.2 million Nigerians,” she noted.

Balarabe further urged corporate sponsors, development partners, and philanthropists to invest in the creative industry, stressing that Kaduna youths possess the energy and talent but require supportive platforms to excel.

On his part, the festival’s Executive Director, Israel Kashim Audu, said this year’s edition was designed to highlight the transformative power of cinema. He revealed that the programme includes film screenings, panel discussions, workshops, and a new skill acquisition initiative targeted at young creatives.

The 8th Kaduna International Film Festival runs from August 26 to 30, featuring films from more than 15 countries.
