Edo at 34: Okpebholo Honors Founding Fathers, Urges Unity Among Citizens

Edo State marked its 34th anniversary on Tuesday, August 27, 2025, with Governor Monday Okpebholo leading celebrations that paid tribute to the state’s founding fathers and called for unity among its people.

The milestone offered an opportunity to reflect on Edo’s journey since its creation in 1991 and to highlight both its achievements and ongoing challenges.
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Governor Okpebholo lauded the resilience, determination, and creativity of the people of Edo State, describing their spirit as “indispensable” to the state’s growth and development.

He emphasized that the state’s progress has been built on the vision, dedication, and sacrifices of past leaders, whose contributions laid the foundation for modern Edo.

Speaking at the anniversary event, Governor Okpebholo said the celebration was not only about marking a historical date but also about reviewing the state’s achievements and renewing the collective commitment toward development.

He highlighted progress in critical sectors including education, healthcare, infrastructure, and economic growth, while acknowledging that challenges remain and require continued collaboration and dedication.

The governor also paid homage to Edo State’s rich cultural heritage, particularly the historical legacy of the ancient Benin Kingdom, which he noted continues to shape the state’s identity and values.

He urged residents to embrace this legacy as a unifying force that can guide Edo toward a more prosperous future.
Central to the governor’s message was a call for unity among all Edo people.

He encouraged citizens to rise above ethnic, political, and social differences, stressing that the state’s growth depends on the active participation and cooperation of its citizens.

He described unity as essential for overcoming obstacles and ensuring sustainable development across the state.

The anniversary was attended by a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil servants, politicians, market women, civil society representatives, and community members. The gathering provided an opportunity for dialogue, celebration, and a reaffirmation of Edo’s commitment to progress and cohesion.

Governor Okpebholo’s leadership continues to focus on fostering unity, advancing development projects, and honoring the legacy of Edo’s founding fathers as the state moves toward its 35th year.

The 34th anniversary serves as both a tribute to the past and a reminder of the shared responsibility of all Edo residents to build a stronger, more united state.
