Makinde Hands Over to Deputy, Proceeds on One-Month Leave

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has officially transmitted power to his deputy ahead of a one-month leave, in compliance with constitutional provisions.

In a letter addressed to the Oyo State House of Assembly and read during Tuesday’s plenary by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, Makinde announced that his leave will run from Thursday, August 29, to Monday, September 29, 2025.

The governor’s decision was taken in line with Section 190(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which mandates state governors to notify the legislature in writing before proceeding on leave, thereby enabling the deputy to act as governor in their absence.

With the formal transmission of power, the deputy governor is expected to oversee the day-to-day running of the state, take key decisions, and represent the government at official functions until Makinde resumes duty at the end of September.

Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin described the governor’s action as “a demonstration of respect for constitutional order and democratic governance,” noting that such compliance strengthens the state’s institutions.

Some lawmakers also hailed the move as a mark of transparency and accountability.

“This is how democracy should work. It shows the governor has confidence in his deputy and is willing to follow due process,” a member of the Assembly told reporters after the session.

Political observers note that Makinde’s decision could further cement trust and cooperation between him and his deputy, while also setting a precedent for smooth power transitions in the state. It may also quiet speculations about cracks within the executive arm, as the governor openly empowers his deputy to take charge in his absence.

For the next one month, attention will shift to how the deputy governor steers the affairs of the state, particularly in managing pressing governance issues, ongoing projects, and political engagements.

Governor Makinde is expected to resume office on September 30, 2025.
