Nigerian Delegation Seeks Brazil Partnership on Agriculture, Energy, Skills

A Nigerian delegation on official visit to Brazil has expressed optimism that the engagement will unlock new opportunities for the country, particularly for state governments.

Speaking during the visit, a state governor noted that the mission, which marks the third in less than two years, is strategically important as it focuses on agriculture, renewable energy, skill development, aviation, industry, and other areas of bilateral cooperation.

He stressed that agriculture remains central to Nigeria’s economic growth and job creation, citing his state’s leading role in the sector. According to him, agriculture currently contributes about 42 percent to the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), while over 60 percent of the workforce is employed in farming and related activities.

“In recognition of this, when I assumed office, I reviewed the budgetary allocation to agriculture and raised it from 0.5 percent, which I inherited, to about 12 percent today,” he said. “This was done to meet and even surpass the Malabo Declaration benchmark of at least 10 percent allocation by both subnational and national governments.”

He added that the visit to Brazil would not only strengthen economic ties but also open avenues for investment and technical partnerships that will help states drive sustainable development.

The Nigerian delegation is expected to hold a series of strategic meetings with Brazilian counterparts and investors during the visit.
