Nasarawa Teachers, Officials Urge Parents to Instill Moral Values in Children

Teachers and government officials in Nasarawa State have called on parents to place greater emphasis on the moral upbringing of their children, stressing that the home remains the strongest foundation for building a responsible society.

Speaking during activities to mark the 2025 National Children’s Day celebration, the state’s Commissioner for Women, Social Development and Humanitarian Services, Barrister Hauwa Samuel Jugbo, warned against neglecting the moral guidance of young people. She said parents and guardians must take deliberate steps to instill discipline, respect and positive values in their children to help curb bullying and other forms of anti-social behavior among the youth.

Jugbo emphasized that government alone cannot shape the future of the younger generation without active parental involvement. According to her, when children are properly guided at home, they are more likely to grow into responsible adults who can contribute meaningfully to the progress of society. She also encouraged children to remain obedient, focused and committed to their studies as a way of honoring the sacrifices of their parents and teachers.

Earlier in the year, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Humanitarian Services, Margaret Elayo, had also made a similar appeal, urging parents to prioritize the education and empowerment of the girl-child. She stressed that moral upbringing is as important as formal education, warning that the erosion of values in society could lead to deeper social problems if not addressed from the family unit.

The repeated calls by education stakeholders and state officials reflect growing concern over the moral decline among young people. They argue that parents, schools and communities must work together to nurture children not only academically but also in character, to ensure a generation better equipped to lead the state and country in future.
