Medical Concerns Put Boniface Transfer to AC Move on Hold

Nigerian international striker, Victor Boniface has returned to Germany after his proposed move to AC Milan hit a stumbling block, with the Serie A giants yet to finalise the deal amid lingering doubts over his fitness.

The 24-year-old forward, who currently plays for Bayer Leverkusen, travelled to Italy earlier this week for what turned into one of the most exhaustive medical examinations in recent Milan history. He underwent tests at La Madonnina Clinic, the Italian Olympic Committee’s facility, and the Galeazzi Hospital, with the club even recalling its trusted orthopaedic specialist from holiday to oversee proceedings.

The extra caution stems from Boniface’s history of two anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries as well as recurring muscular problems, which have cast a shadow over the potential transfer.

Negotiations between both clubs had been progressing steadily, with the structure of the deal set at a €5 million loan fee and an option to buy worth around €24–25 million. Milan sees Boniface as a potential addition to bolster its attacking options for the new season, but the outcome of the medicals has forced the club to pause before committing fully.

Reports indicate that Milan’s doctors ordered additional checks on Boniface’s right knee after initial scans flagged concerns. While the striker impressed with his performances last season — scoring 11 goals in 19 Bundesliga appearances despite injury setbacks — the Rossoneri are wary of investing heavily in a player who might be at risk of further long-term absences.

A final decision is expected in the coming days as Milan’s management, including the sporting director and medical staff, weigh whether to approve the transfer, renegotiate terms, or abandon the pursuit altogether.

If completed, Boniface would be expected to slot quickly into Milan’s squad, but if not, the club may be forced to turn to alternative attacking targets before the transfer window closes.

For now, Boniface has rejoined Leverkusen in Germany, awaiting clarity on whether his Italian adventure will materialise or fade into another near miss in a career already punctuated by injury challenges.
