Police Vow Disciplinary Action Against Officer Seen Assaulting Motorist in Viral Video

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has promised disciplinary action against a traffic officer captured in a viral video assaulting a motorist in Abuja. The incident, which occurred in the Galadima area of the capital, sparked outrage after the footage showed the officer forcibly dragging and hitting the motorist while he was still inside his car.
In a statement released by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, the officer was identified as ASP Attahiru Isah. She confirmed that administrative and disciplinary proceedings had already been initiated, with those involved summoned to answer for their actions. The police described the conduct as unacceptable and inconsistent with the professional standards expected of officers.
The Command urged the motorist who was assaulted, as well as members of the public with credible information about the incident, to come forward to aid the investigation. Authorities stressed that transparency and fairness would guide the process, ensuring that justice is done and seen to be done.
“The FCT Police Command reiterates its commitment to upholding professionalism, accountability and discipline within the force. Any officer found engaging in misconduct will face the consequences in line with extant regulations,” the statement read.
The incident adds to growing concerns about police–citizen relations, especially in cases where excessive force is used during routine duties.
Public reactions to the video have called for stricter oversight and stronger measures to curb abuse of authority by officers on the road.
The outcome of the disciplinary process against ASP Isah is expected to set a precedent for similar cases, as the police continue efforts to restore public confidence in law enforcement.
