NANS Warns Against Fresh ASUU Strike

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has expressed concern over the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ (ASUU) threat of industrial action, citing the potential for further instability in the nation’s education system.

NANS acknowledged the grievances raised by ASUU, including the need for renegotiation of agreements, payment of salary arrears, and welfare of retired lecturers.

However, the students’ body emphasized that any strike would have severe consequences for Nigerian students, who are often the most affected.

The association highlighted the progress made in the education sector under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, including the establishment of the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) and the maintenance of an uninterrupted academic calendar for over two years. NANS urged the Federal Government to prioritize resolving the outstanding issues with ASUU to protect these gains.

NANS also appealed to ASUU to consider the impact of a strike on students and to continue dialogue with the government. The association emphasized the need for both parties to work together to find a solution that would not disrupt the academic calendar further.
