Kanu Urges NBA to Table His Case at National Conference

The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has appealed to the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to include his matter as part of the deliberations at its 2025 Annual General Conference scheduled to hold in Enugu State.

Kanu made the request in a letter addressed to the NBA President and dated August 18, 2025. The letter, which was received at the association’s national secretariat on August 22 and made available to journalists in Abuja on Friday, was titled “Re: Miscarriages of Justice in the Case of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”

In the correspondence personally signed by him, the IPOB leader insisted that the NBA, as a custodian of the legal profession and promoter of the rule of law, must not remain silent on what he described as the injustices surrounding his trial.

“Sir, my name is Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), an organisation which is a lawful human rights movement registered in over 18 countries of the world, peacefully agitating for the right to self-determination of Biafra Republic. This is a fundamental human right of association guaranteed both in local and international laws and human rights instruments,” the letter partly read.

Kanu, who has been in custody over terrorism-related charges, urged the NBA to use its platform to speak against what he termed “a clear miscarriage of justice,” stressing that his prolonged detention without conclusion of trial undermines Nigeria’s justice system.

The NBA’s 2025 Annual General Conference is expected to attract legal practitioners, scholars, judges, policymakers, and human rights advocates from across the country.
