Catholic Diocese of Sokoto Donates Wheelchairs to Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital

The Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, under the leadership of Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, has donated wheelchairs to the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) in Sokoto, in a gesture aimed at improving patient care and mobility support within the facility.

The donation, presented to hospital authorities this week, highlights the Diocese’s ongoing commitment to social welfare and humanitarian outreach in northern Nigeria. Bishop Kukah noted that the initiative was part of the Church’s responsibility to support the vulnerable and to strengthen institutions that provide essential services to society.

Hospital officials welcomed the gesture, stressing that the wheelchairs would significantly ease the burden of patients with mobility challenges, particularly those who often struggle to access adequate support within public healthcare settings.

They commended the Diocese for identifying a critical need and responding in a timely manner.

The Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, one of the leading referral centers in the region, caters to thousands of patients across Sokoto and neighboring states. With limited resources and a growing patient load, donations such as this serve to bridge gaps in the healthcare system.

This latest contribution adds to a series of charitable efforts by the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, which has over the years provided educational scholarships, food relief, and medical supplies to vulnerable communities.

The Diocese maintains that such initiatives are an extension of its mission to uphold human dignity and serve as a beacon of hope for marginalized groups.

For many patients and their families, the wheelchairs are more than just mobility aids; they represent an improvement in quality of care and a reminder that communities can work together to strengthen Nigeria’s health sector.
