Consortium Awaits FEC Approval to Begin $5 Billion Lagos-Abuja Super Highway Project
A consortium involved in the $5 billion Lagos-Abuja Super Highway Project has announced that preparations are complete for the commencement of the 470-kilometer road construction. The group is currently awaiting approval from the Federal Executive Council (FEC) before proceeding to the site to begin work.
The new highway aims to reduce travel time between Lagos and Abuja from approximately 12 hours to just four hours. The project will be carried out through a public-private partnership and is expected to operate as a toll road.
Chief Kenny Martins, leader of the consortium representing AEC Unity Network Limited, expressed optimism that the project would start by the end of 2025. He also extended gratitude to Works Minister Dave Umahi and officials from the presidency and federal ministries for their support in completing the initial phases, which included design, studies, and approvals.
“What remains now is for FEC to grant the necessary approval for the take-off and flag-off of the project,” Martins said.
He added that the super highway will provide easier and more affordable travel between the two cities, benefiting Nigerians across the country.
Additionally, Martins revealed plans to construct a spur along the highway to serve commuters traveling toward Ondo State, pending future approvals. Talks are also ongoing with the government of Niger State to build a spur linking the Baro Port to increase its commercial viability.
The consortium’s efforts mark a significant step toward modernizing transportation infrastructure between Nigeria’s key economic and political hubs.
