UK Praises Tinubu’s Economic Reforms, Sees New Opportunities for Nigeria

The United Kingdom has commended President Bola Tinubu’s economic and trade reforms, describing them as bold and necessary steps that could unlock new opportunities for Nigeria’s growth.

British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, made the commendation during a courtesy visit to First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.

Montgomery expressed the UK government’s admiration for the reforms, which, despite their challenges, have created positive prospects for trade and investment between the UK and Nigeria. He also praised the First Lady’s Renewed Hope Initiative, noting its significant role in empowering women through education, health, and humanitarian efforts.

The UK envoy highlighted the British government’s interest in Nigeria’s ongoing constitutional amendment process, particularly the proposal for special seats for women in the National Assembly.

He emphasized the importance of increased female representation in governance.

In response, Senator Tinubu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing Nigerians’ needs through the Renewed Hope Initiative, aligning with President Tinubu’s agenda. She stressed the initiative’s focus on empowering women in the informal sector, noting its direct impact on their lives.

The First Lady also acknowledged concerns over the low number of women in the National Assembly and pledged to support efforts to improve female representation.

“We have to really know the right people to represent us, who can really do the work, and that is what we have to enlighten our women about,” she said.

The visit was attended by the British Deputy High Commissioner, Gill Lever, and underscores the UK’s interest in strengthening bilateral relations with Nigeria. The UK sees potential for enhanced trade and investment opportunities between the two nations, particularly with the reforms undertaken by President Tinubu’s administration.
